My 2016 Resolution

It’s that time of year when everyone is making resolutions. I know, they get such a bad rap, but I still love them. I always make some challenges for myself because we can all be better. Always. It doesn’t have to start in January but with a new year does come a fresh new start. Who doesn’t love a fresh start??

Last year I decided to take more time for myself. I had a three year old, one-and-half year old and a six month old. I was out of shape, unhealthy in every meaning of the word, exhausted and unhappy. I got in the gym with a plan, started eating better and I didn’t stop mid-February. My “me time” comes at 5 a.m. and most people think I’m crazy to get up at 4:45 everyday just to squeeze an hour at the gym into my life. But it keeps me sane and happy and I go to bed at like 8:30 so it all works out.

I’ve never been athletic. I can play volleyball well enough to get through a game {maybe} but that’s the extent of it. I hate running {we’ve discussed this}. I knew nothing about weight lifting. My kids were waking me up 277 times a night. Our gym doesn’t offer classes. I didn’t have a workout partner. It was just me, myself, and some goals.

About an 8 month difference

Pic on the left totally grosses me out. Not even gonna lie, it’s hard to put out there but there it is. It was a few months after having Vance. I took the picture then waited another few months before I even did anything about it.

I’m sharing because there are many of you out there who are just getting started. This is your year. If I can give you any advice it’s this:

  • Take pictures. I know, it sucks. It sucks bad. You don’t have to show anyone. But in two months when the scales haven’t moved as much as you wanted them to, an “after” picture may be the one thing that keeps you motivated to keep at it. It saved me many many many times.
  • Stay consistent. Don’t give it 100% Monday-Friday then binge eat all weekend. You will get nowhere. Nowhere fast.
  • Drink all the water. All of it.
  • Protein…get enough.
  • Do something you enjoy because if you don’t like doing it you’ll stop. For me, I hate running. I’ll do a little of it but prefer to get my cardio other ways…Zumba, for example. I love lifting weights. So that’s what I do.
  • Don’t starve yourself.
  • Push yourself. Get your heart rate up. You ain’t gonna die.
  • Also I’m not a doctor, so you might. Don’t die.
  • If you gain two pounds in a week…it ain’t muscle. It’s you eating too much. Just FYI.

Get healthy, peeps. You’ll feel better. And don’t stop after a month because you aren’t where you want to be. Cuz guess what, if you stop, you’ll never get there.
